The 15-year-old Xiao Liu (pseudonym) did not expect that he had just entered high school life and was stabbed with a knife by his roommate.
He has been in hospital for two months and is still lying in the hospital bed. Recalling the scene at that time, Xiao Liu still felt deep fear and pain.
The occurrence of this campus violence has also impacted two families and the originally peaceful campus.
A small quarrel causes great harm.
The incident occurred in Hainan Affiliated Middle School of Huazhong Normal University in Haikou City. Since its official unveiling in April 2013, this private middle school has been widely welcomed by some local parents with its teaching achievements of "low score entrance and high score exit".
From the hospital bed, Xiao Liu recalled the scene to the reporter of China Youth Daily and China Youth Network: After 12 noon on September 23rd, he went back to the dormitory to rest after lunch. After entering the dormitory, he accidentally stepped on the shoes of his roommate Xiao Zhang (a pseudonym), and they immediately quarreled, and Xiao Zhang began to beat him on the spot. After the two were pulled away by other roommates, he left the dormitory and came to the corridor, but was caught up by Xiao Zhang and stabbed him in the chest, abdomen and other parts with a fruit knife.
After the incident, the boarding house dialed 120. Accompanied by the class teacher and a school leader, Xiao Liu was sent to the First Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical College for emergency treatment. The doctor sewed up three main wounds on Xiao Liu’s chest, abdomen and leg. After being out of danger, Xiao Liu was transferred to the trauma department of the hospital for further treatment.
"At that time, we received a phone call saying that something had happened to the child, and his father and I rushed over. After coming, the child was still rescued inside. The hospital gave us a large list, with a rescue fee of more than 5,000 yuan and a hospitalization fee of more than 10,000 yuan. " Ms. Liang, the mother of Xiao Liu, said that in the afternoon of the incident, Xiong Xiaoguang, president of Hainan Affiliated Middle School of Central China Normal University, director of Guoxing Police Station of Qiongshan Branch of Haikou Public Security Bureau and Xiao Zhang’s father went to the ward to visit Xiao Liu.
That night, Xiao Liu suffered from severe abdominal pain. The hospital did various tests for him and found that there was fluid in his abdomen. The hospital asked him to do minimally invasive endoscopic surgery immediately to check whether there was any stab wound or injury to his abdominal viscera.
However, this operation did not reach a correct conclusion on whether Xiao Liu had organ damage. After the operation, Xiao Liu’s high fever continued with intense abdominal pain, and he needed to keep playing painkillers to maintain it. After about a week’s observation, the doctor thought it was necessary to have another operation, open a 15 cm incision in the abdomen and carefully check whether the internal organs were damaged. On September 29th, Xiao Liu underwent general anesthesia and a second flaw detection operation.
The operation lasted from 9: 00 a.m. to 2: 00 p.m. that day. The attending doctor informed the family that the child’s stomach was penetrated by a murder weapon, resulting in ascites and pus accumulation in the abdomen. A few days after the operation, according to the doctor’s advice, Xiao Liu could only open the suture needle at the operation mouth, insert the drainage tube to drain the pus and effusion inside, and wait for the operation wound to heal slowly.
An indelible shadow
"School didn’t start until August 26th, and this happened on September 23rd. Less than a month after school started, the school was also unlucky!" Xiong Xiaoguang said that this vicious incident has had a great negative impact on the school.
At the beginning of November, a local media in Hainan reported this incident. The report mentioned that there was a related contradiction between Xiao Liujiachang and the school and Xiao Zhang’s parents because of medical expenses, so that Xiong Xiaoguang and Xiao Zhang’s parents blacked out Xiao Liujiachang’s contact information.
Relevant lawyers said in an interview with the media that after the incident, if the school and the family members of the injured have indeed reached an agreement, everything should be based on ensuring the treatment of the injured, and the school should guarantee the treatment expenses, and then determine the responsibility according to the investigation results after the treatment of the injured. On this basis, the three parties have reached an agreement, and the school should abide by this agreement to protect the medical expenses of the injured. According to the relevant provisions of the Tort Liability Law, if a person with limited capacity for civil conduct is injured at school, if the school fails to fulfill its safety management responsibility, the school shall bear the corresponding liability for compensation. As for whether the school has fulfilled its corresponding safety management responsibilities and should bear the corresponding liability for compensation, it is necessary to make a further judgment after the relevant facts are investigated clearly.
Xiong Xiaoguang accused the local media in Hainan of being inaccurate and considered its report "nonsense". The media published Xiong Xiaoguang’s telephone recording accusing the reporter in subsequent follow-up reports.
This happened less than a month after entering high school, which had a great impact on Xiao Liu and Xiao Zhang, two children who just turned 15. Xiao Liu’s mother told reporters: "This semester began in the first year of high school. He has been lying here for two months. I don’t know if I can keep up when I go to school."
In addition to the academic impact, Xiao Liu’s mother said: "This incident has a great impact, and the children will have a shadow when they go back to school. As long as he goes to that place, he will have a shadow. " For more than a month, Xiao Liu’s father and mother took turns to take care of their son and could not work.
And Xiao Zhang was unable to continue attending classes at school because of this. Xiao Zhang was immediately taken away by the Guoxing police station for investigation after the incident. On September 24th, Guoxing Police Station agreed that parents should guarantee to take him home according to the provisions of the Criminal Law that "minors over 14 years old but under 16 years old will only bear criminal responsibility for crimes of intentional homicide, intentional injury causing serious injury or death, rape, robbery, drug trafficking, arson, explosion and throwing dangerous substances", and the police station will wait until Xiao Liu is discharged from the hospital for injury identification.
Xiao Zhang’s father once told the media that as a parent, he was very sad that such a thing happened to two children. After the incident, he also actively communicated with the families of the injured and paid the children about 35,000 yuan in succession, but the economic situation at home was really difficult. Now the whole family is raising money every day.
The reporter of China Youth Daily and China Youth Network tried to contact Xiao Zhang’s parents many times, but the other party either hung up after answering the phone or directly refused to answer it.
Xiao Liu’s mother told reporters that during Xiao Liu’s hospitalization, a woman who she thought might be Xiao Zhang’s mother often appeared outside the ward to visit. The lady refused to admit that she was Xiao Zhang’s mother, but told Xiao Liu’s mother that she would visit her often until the child was discharged from the hospital.
Why did this school violence happen?
We have only known each other for 28 days. What is the contradiction between Xiao Liu and Xiao Zhang, two 15-year-old children? The police have not released the details. At present, only Xiao Liu’s mother’s unilateral statement is available in public reports and interviews.
The local public security organs immediately intervened in the investigation after the incident, and the specific criminal responsibility and economic compensation could not be defined until the forensic identification. Just from the perspective of campus, what are the reasons that led to the campus violence of two senior one students?
The Code of Daily Behavior for Middle School Students stipulates that middle school students "respect each other, unite and help each other, understand and tolerate each other, treat each other sincerely, communicate normally, and do not bully the small, bully the classmates, tease others, and make more self-criticism in case of conflicts".
It is understood that the Hainan Affiliated Middle School of Central China Normal University has organized students to study the rules and regulations such as the "Code of Daily Conduct for Middle School Students" during the military training for freshmen, and conducted open-book examinations.
Is this kind of study and education just a formality? The students in Class 5, Grade 1, of the school who share the same dormitory with Xiao Liu and Xiao Zhang said: "Xiao Liu may like to joke at ordinary times, and we all think it’s nothing." "But Xiao Zhang is introverted, doesn’t like to talk and doesn’t know how to joke, so in Xiao Zhang’s view, Xiao Liu’s jokes are more serious." One student told reporters: "Xiao Zhang was really fed up that day. He was really impulsive."
In the eyes of roommates, school education has not taught students how to live in harmony and how to resolve disputes peacefully. Because of their personality differences, Xiao Zhang and Xiao Liu failed to get along well within 28 days of meeting each other, even though they were classmates and shared the same dormitory. What’s more, they didn’t know that the strong impulse of adolescence might have serious consequences, which eventually led to the occurrence of this campus violence.
When some scholars analyze the psychology of the perpetrators in campus violence from the psychological point of view, they think that the perpetrators are usually greatly influenced by their parents’ words and deeds, and various factors such as poor family education and family breakdown are a heavy blow to teenagers. The use of violence to educate children will also lead children to learn from their parents’ behavior and use violence to solve problems.
Xiong Xiaoguang doesn’t think this incident reflects the failure of the school in educating students. He gave this reply: "These two children have just come to our school for less than a month, not to say that we have been educated for two or three years. We can’t say that our school education has failed because of such a thing."
However, the reporter learned in an interview on campus that before this incident, Xiao Zhang had punched his roommate for failing to throw garbage into the trash can many times when he was in charge of the dormitory duty. After the incident, the dormitory students reported it to the class teacher, but the teacher didn’t pay enough attention to it.
In addition, some students told reporters that Xiao Zhang fought with people many times in junior high school and solved problems with his fists.
When interviewed by reporters, Xiao Liu’s mother didn’t mention anything about her son’s fault in the incident, saying that her children had been very good at school since childhood, and thought that there was no contradiction between her son and Xiao Zhang before, but it was unlucky that such a thing happened.
Regarding the two children’s next schooling after the incident, Xiong Xiaoguang said that because it is not a compulsory education stage, it is uncertain whether they will return to the middle school attached to China Normal University. However, he said that the cultural classes that children have left behind will be specially sent by teachers, and full-time psychological teachers will be found to provide psychological counseling for children.
Haikou City Education Bureau publicly responded to this case of school violence, saying that after the incident, it intervened in the investigation for the first time and was currently waiting for the results of the police responsibility appraisal. After the results came out, it would make further judgment and treatment according to the results.
Eliminating campus violence and expecting to strengthen mental health education
Chen Ling, a senior psychology teacher in Hainan Middle School, said in an interview with China Youth Daily and China Youth Network that a child like Xiao Zhang may have self-willed, self-centered, relatively narrow-minded and impatient psychological problems in the process of growing up, so he has long been depressed. When encountering problems, they show a combative, stubborn and impulsive side, and their ability to withstand setbacks is also relatively low. In the future education process, parents and schools should pay more attention to his repressed emotions and more psychological needs. Chen Ling suggested that in the future, Xiao Zhang can adjust himself by empathy and control his feelings rationally.
For children like Xiao Liu, Chen Ling thinks that they don’t have a correct understanding of the communication between classmates, and they should strengthen their training in the verbal expression of getting along with each other.
At the same time, Chen Ling believes that the school should strengthen the mental health education for students, and combine the psychological development characteristics of adolescent children who attach great importance to interpersonal communication but are sensitive and impulsive, and properly guide and help students. Help students to vent their emotions properly, so that students can learn to communicate and communicate with appropriate mentality and speech.
At the level of parents, Chen Ling thinks that parents should make self-examination in this matter, and reflect on how self-family education and example guidance are done. In addition to helping children learn to communicate well, they should also learn to take a step back and learn to be tolerant and considerate when encountering problems.
