  In 2008, the American Academy of Engineering put forward 14 major engineering science and technology challenges that human beings need to deal with in the 21st century.   In his keynote speech at the Third Global Challenge Forum, Academician Deng Zhonghan told a vivid story about the rapid growth of China’s sharing economy, taking the booming bike-sharing as an example, and analyzed the ideas, models and technological innovations behind the sharing economy, so as to inspire the engineering and technological elites and college students’ representatives of the three countries to show China’s wisdom in coping with major challenges and driving economic development, and called on the global engineering and scientific circles to make great innovations and work together to create a new situation of development.

  Academician Deng Zhonghan said that in a short period of one year, the number of bike-sharing in China has suddenly increased from 2 million to 20 million, and it may increase to 50 million by the end of 2017. Well-deserved to become a phenomenal product! This innovation and technology model is of great significance to alleviate the headache of traffic congestion in big cities, and also plays an important auxiliary role in saving energy, reducing emissions and reducing pollution.

  Deng Zhonghan emphasized that bike-sharing’s success in China is due to the strong support of China’s IT Internet infrastructure construction. In recent years, China has invested billions of dollars in Internet infrastructure construction, and built the world’s largest communication optical fiber network through key enterprises such as China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom. At present, China has more than 730 million Internet users, 1.12 billion mobile Internet users, 1.25 billion mobile phone users and 700 million smart phone users, ranking first in the world.

  Outside bike-sharing, several generations of scientists in China have made a series of scientific and technological breakthroughs and engineering achievements in the fields of aerospace, high-speed rail, bridges, hydropower and renewable energy through continuous innovation. In recent years, China’s space program is rapidly catching up with the world leaders with the Long March rocket, Tiangong Space Station, Shenzhou spacecraft and Chang ‘e’s space flight to the moon. In terms of transportation, China has built the largest and longest expressway system in the world. What attracts the world’s attention is that China has built a high-speed railway system with the strongest technology and the largest scale under construction in the world!   Deng Zhonghan pointed out that, like the China scientists who made outstanding contributions such as Qian Xuesen, Deng Jiaxian and Hou Debang, and the foreign scientists who made outstanding achievements such as Edison, Bell and Steve Jobs, engineers can change the world through technology and model innovation.   In his speech, Deng Zhonghan combed 14 major challenges facing the world: making solar energy more economical, providing energy through nuclear fusion, promoting the development of carbon sequestration, controlling the nitrogen cycle, providing clean water, improving urban infrastructure, promoting the progress of health informatics, developing better drugs, reverse engineering the brain, preventing nuclear terrorism, ensuring the arrangement of cyberspace, strengthening the development of virtual reality technology, promoting personalized learning, and developing various scientific discovery tools. He pointed out that these major challenges are actually an effective way to inspire the engineering community, young people and the general public to seek solutions.   At the same time, Deng Zhonghan also stressed that many problems facing mankind at present are systemic problems, and it is not enough to overcome major challenges only by innovation, but also by uniting more forces to make concerted efforts.   Science has no national boundaries, but scientists have a motherland. On October 1, 1999, Deng Zhonghan was invited back to China to attend the National Day ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, and was cordially received and eagerly summoned by the party and state leaders. He resolutely gave up his successful career and affluent life in the United States in order to start the integrated circuit business in his motherland. Under the direct leadership of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (formerly the Ministry of Information Industry), it undertook and started the national "Starlight China Core Project" and founded Zhongxing Microelectronics Company in Zhongguancun, Beijing, which opened a new course of returning to China for innovation and entrepreneurship.

  As one of the main pioneers of China’s large-scale integrated circuit chip system design technology and industrialization, Deng Zhonghan led the "Starlight China Core Project" to enter the international market on a large scale for the first time, which was adopted by Apple, Samsung, Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo and Huawei, occupying more than 60% of the global market share of computer image input chips; Zhongxing Microelectronics Co., Ltd. also became the first chip core technology design enterprise listed on NASDAQ in the United States, and won the annual award of the Global Semiconductor Design Association in 2006, completely ending the history of China’s "core-free", so Academician Deng Zhonghan was also known as "the father of China’s core". He led the team to win the "First Prize of National Science and Technology Progress" twice in 2004 and 2013.

  In recent years, in order to meet the strategic needs of the country, Academician Deng Zhonghan led the team to undertake major national research tasks, and other units worked together to formulate the national standard of SVAC, the basic information source of Skynet security monitoring, which has independent intellectual property rights in China and the technology has reached the international leading level, and built an independent and controllable security monitoring industrial chain from chips, algorithms, terminal equipment, system platforms to overall solutions in China. Basic and strategic work has been done to better protect national public safety and information security, and a solid technical foundation has been laid for building a national "Skynet" project with national unity, global coverage, controllable whole process and network sharing.

  After several years of unremitting efforts, in June 2016, Academician Deng Zhonghan led the team to overcome five core technologies, such as "convolutional neural network processor technology based on data-driven parallel computing architecture" and "embedded deep learning machine vision SoC technology", and launched the first neural network processor (NPU) chip with deep learning artificial intelligence in China, "Starlight Intelligence No.1", which made the field of deep learning artificial intelligence in China enter the international advanced ranks in one fell swoop. This chip was first applied in the security monitoring industry based on SVAC national standards, which made the security monitoring industry in China enter the intelligent era from the analog era and the digital era.
